Blog spam

I have recently being getting a lot of comment spam in the blog.
WordPress luckily has some “minor” spam protection as default, but I still have to moderate the spam manually. What solutions do you all use out there in the blogging community?
I would love to know how people deal with it and maybe then I could post an article to help other bloggers like myself.

I find that Word Verification on blogger helps cut it down.

Ed - captcha can be useful if implemented correctly, but it can also be painful. I use IO Error’s bad behavior (sic) plugin which works very well.

Hey Janine, I only started to get “serious” amounts of blog spam in the last week or so.
I spend a lot of time trying to figure out if I have any genuine comments amongst the ones marked spam.

I hope you do not experience the same problems I do.

I gave up on Wordpress for exactly that reason and went to Serendipity instead. Anyway, one solution for me was to rename the php files responsible for posting comments to another name. Cant remember the filenames right now, though. It involved a bit of manual work in some files, but did take care of a bunch of spam mails. Filtering comments by blacklist or subject can also do the trick, but might of course cause problems with genuine comments.
