A guide to improving your cashflow August 8, 2006
Posted by Ed in : Guides , trackbackA few choice tips about how to make your transfers work for you in FPL.
These days the money is getting really tight in FPL and you only have £100 million for 15 players. With the top players like Lampard, Gerrard, Henry, Shevchenko all costing £10 million+, £47.5 million for the lot!, you won’t have much money left for your other 11 players. Some people can improve their transfer budget by over £10 million over the course of the year, thats enough cash for a top class scoring midfielder or better yet to improve the quality of 3-4 players in your team, which can make a big difference.
So here are my top five ways to get your cashflow up so you can start to afford the top players.
1) Buy and sell quickly, don’t wait for a few weeks to see how things pan out, take a chance. Leaving the purchase of a player even two or three days can on occasion be enough to cost you 0.1 or 0.2 Million.
2) Buy players who have exceptional one off weeks e.g Taylor from Portsmouth got a 23 one week! Needless to say his price rose that week.
3) Read the real FPL’s pundit’s recommendations (a lot of people listen to him and he can cause some movement in the transfer market, even if the choices go belly up)
4) At the begining of a season, look at players who done very well in the Championship. Pay particular attention to goal scoring midfielders and strikers with 20+ goals in the championship. Every year the money seems to get tighter and tighter in FPL so you will need to find the odd diamond in the rough to boost your earnings and your cashflow.
5) Take a gamble every now and then on a player. Look at players that are playing poor teams for a few weeks in a row and buy a player you think will do well for them (this applies to the midtable and relegation candidates mostly as a top player will cost you big money)
If anyone has other top tips for making money in the transfer market, post them in the comments and the best ones will be added to the list.

Good tips mate. Finding value players is going to be my main focus over the next season. Last year there were some real standouts – for me Michael Gray was the sleeper nobody noticed, because the total points are used in the value calculations instead of points per game. When you figured out that he’d missed out half the games, and that when he did play, he got roughly 5 points a game, he was great value. He sat at 3.6m for ages before anybody really noticed.
I reckon it’s important to add points per game in if a player’s been injured for a while or if someone like Mourinho falls out with a player (like Del Horno or Carvalho last year). If they get back in and have a run in the side, you’re better using the points per game divided by the cost than the total points divided by the cost.
Top effort – keep up the good work. I’m working on similar stuff and I reckon this is going to be a massive help mate.
Looks like the value buys this season will be mainly in the midfeild. Following are my top picks value wise (by the way great site mate)
1 – Scott Parker – newcastle -(6.0) – cheap as chips and has been told by the gaffer to get forward more this season.
2 – Steffanovik – pompey – (4.0) – Has been given the captains armband, so will play full mins and with johnson, campbell and taylor, pompey should do much better in defence this year.
3 – Ambrose – Charlton – (5.5) – Had a decent year last year and has been favoured by Dowie. Should pick up a few goals.
4 – Assou-Ekotto – Tottenham (5.0) – Looks set to play full mins, gets forward often and 5.0 for a tottenham defender is a steal.
5 – Rochemback – Boro – (6.0) – Had more shots on goal than most midfeilders last term and has been predicted to come good this season by most pundits.
I reckon Stefanovic is a magic shout AussieJezza.
I’m gonna gamble on Hahnemann for the first five games in the goal (but then the run gets tricky…)
Then I reckon value-wyse, I’d add to your excellent list:
- Lua Lua
- Downing
- Gonzalez (although it’s not clear whether he’ll play regularly)
- Matty Taylor – same as Stefanovic but I reckon he’ll get forward a lot more this season, especially if they do manage to sign Manuel Fernandes or another decent digger in front of the centre halves).
- Gary O’Neill – as above
- Camara – I don’t think they’ll miss Bullard and Roberts as much as some pundits are saying
It’s hard to say though eh?
Is Henry worth 14m as captain? I reckon he is even at that price actually.
BTW skysports are saying that Gary O’Neill is the skipper this season at Pompey – is it Stefanovic?
Ahahahahaaa – and Lua Lua has an ankle knock. Doh!

Guardian Fantasy’s pundit said that stefanovic was cap but who knows.
- Like your picks Roy, taylor is also in my team. I’m taking a gamble on pompeys defence, even though they were miserable defencively last season. Will be keeping a keen eye on downing.
Do you guys think it’ll be Stefanovic then? Andy O’Brien is there aswell… it’s got to be worth the gamble – I like him as a player.
I’ve gone for (subject to change):
Hahnemann Kenny
Bridge Taylor Stefanovic Sommeil Demerit
O’Neill Cahill Gonzalez Downing Lampard
Henry (c) Shevchenko Zamora
Duff is a maybe, as are a few of the names above (Bridge, for example), but will let it stew today and have a think about it.
What about you guys?
I’m picking my final team later this evening. I will post up the screen shot. Thank god the footy is back
Wondered what you guys think of my team, Have got a few gamlbes in the side that I think could come good. Do you think Campbell is good bargain?
starting 11
Van der Sar
—-
Terry (c)
Dawson
A. Ferdinand
—-
G O’Neill
Lennon
Reo-coker
Davis (villa)
—-
Samaras
McCarthy
Henry
—–
Subs – Kirkland, Sol Campbell ,P Neville, Nelsen
One thing I was going to say also is that I don’t think I would ever have two players from the same team in defence. Big gamble if you ever do!!!
It’s funny you should say that mate – I’ve always gone for multiple defenders from the same team based on upcoming runs actually – last year I had a lot of joy from Finnan, Carragher and Reina, and then Gray and Kiznishvili. When Everton had their top 4 season I had Weir, Stubbs, and Hibbert and it worked out OK. I reckon it means some weeks with a lower score, but some weeks where you score big points.
If the defence looks good, they all do well (if they all get picked week in week out). Pompey could do really well I reckon with the new signings. Stefanovic is a brilliant shout if he plays every week.
nice guide dude, i see ur wiseness…
anyway guys, if u need any fpl guides, i found one which is very good IMO… it’s here
Enjoy~
