Quick buy alert! August 20, 2006
Posted by Ed in : fantasy footy, quick but alert , trackback
If you don’t already have Wayne Bridge, buy him quickly.
His price is way below any other Chelsea players at £4.5 million (Robert Huth is £5.5 million!)
He kept a clean sheet and got an assist. He will probably get a performance bonus too. You will probably make a few quid on him if you get in quick!

Ed - do you reckon at this early stage it’s worth playing the transfer wildcard?
A lot of players go shooting up in value at the start of the season, so it could be a good way to boost the kitty pretty quickly (if you used it to buy, say, Bridge, Bowyer, three decent Pompey players, or some of the other bargains).
What do you reckon? Too early? A mate of mine has tested it out, and it basically means you can do unlimited changes within a gameweek without any transfers being counted.
Roy, I can’t see that anywhere on the FPL site. If you can do that it’s an interesting time to choose to do it. Bowyer, Kanu, James, Cambell, Mellberg, etc.. may be good choices.
People will be dying to fine tune their squads over the next couple of weeks and get a few bargins in.
You could easily make 1, 1.5 million if you choose to do it now.
Do you only get one of these a season?
Have you a link to where this is mentioned on the FPL site? Hmmm, something to consider, definately easy money.

“You can play 1 transfer wild card a season. All transfers made in the Gameweek your wild card is played will be without points deduction. You play your wild card when confirming transfers.
Any transfers you make will become active at the next deadline.”
Interetsting, very interesting. I may write a post on using this wildcard to best effect. Any suggestions for the post would be much appreciated
yeah, you get 1 wildcard a season mate - i’ve just gone for it to see how it works, and it’s interesting - you can actually trade on players (buy and sell before the next gameweek starts) and make some dough that way.
here’s the link:
http://fantasy.premierleague.com/M/help.mc?category=transfers
i’ve bought James, Terry, Primus, Mellberg, Arteta, Francis, Bowyer, Zamora, Johnson, and Saha (sold Hahnemann, Taylor, Sommeil, DeMerit, Gonzalez, O’Neill, Convey, Harewood, Henry, and Shevchenko).
i’ll keep having a look each night to see if the prices have gone up, and then i can switch the team around again just before the start of gameweek 2 and cash in some profits maybe. Out of those I don’t think i’d keep them all, but they’ll might go up a few hundred thousand by Tuesday morning - worth a go eh? if not, at least we’ll find out.
i don’t the wildcard being much use later in the season if we keep our eye on what teams are out on upcoming gameweeks - that way you can plan your transfers eh?
for suggestions Ed, all i’d add to the official thing is that you’re not restricted to one set of transfers - you could make ten transfers every day for five days, and none of them would show on your transfer history (maybe they show up the week after). that means you can use it to trade in and out of players and cash in some quick bucks.
Ed, I just found your blog, great job, hope you keep it up for the whole season as im sure we can all benefit.
Have just arrived back in Australia from 2 years living in the UK and needed a little forum where the fantasy league is discussed and this is perfect, it is a lot harder to stay in touch with all the premership goss when you live on the other side of the world, BBC.co.uk only goes so far!!
Anyway enough about that. With relation to the transfer wildcard I agree that it would be better used early on in the season, however I was reading through the help section and it stated that a player values may change by 0.1 a day based on activity in the transfer market. Is this is capped at 0.1 a day or can it be greater? The reason I ask is that if this is the maximum that a players value can increase per day, it may be worth hanging on to the wildcard until after, say, Gameweek 3 where there are 12 days between gameweeks compared to after Gameweek 1 or 2 where there is only 3 days inbetween that gameweek and the next one. Therefore there will be a greater chance that a players value will increase.
If this increase is capped at 0.1 a day then you will not be making much money this week or next as the value is rounded down, so even if they increase by 0.1 each day (therefore a total of 0.3 for all 3 days) you will probably only get a 0.2 increase at best when you take into account the sell on fee.
This may be something worth considering when using your transfer wildcard, any information on whether the value increase is capped at 0.1 a day would be worth knowing.
Hey Nic,
Welcome to the site, I hope it can help a few people along the way.
As far as I am aware there is no cap on how much a player can go up in one day. It may well be worth waiting until the games are over in game week 2.
Usually a player who plays well (i.e. get a good score) for two weeks in a row will have a surge in price.
However it may also be worth noting that the 12 day gameweek usually stops people buying for a few days. You don’t want to buy a player at the begining of an international break and they come back from international duty injured.
It’s a fine line, lets see how much players rise and fall over the next two days. It should be interesting given there are 750,000 players of fpl this year, prices may shoot up rapidly.
Morning folks
Amazingly, I didn’t see any price changes this morning when I had a look. Maybe they have still to be updated…
Sometimes you get silly jumps in price based on a single week, and if that week is repeated, you get even sillier jumps - Chimbonda did that last year.
There’s some excellent value there this year though eh?
I’m learning my Excel just now for a new job, so I reckon this is the ideal sandpit to play with the stats in. I’ll post all the boring stuff on my site, and we’ll see if anything interesting comes out of it.
Last month (when bored on a train journey with work) I figured out that based on last year’s stats, the average player scored 1.61 points for every extra million spent. Based on that logic, if you buy a defender for 4.5 million, you could expect a points return of 1.61 per game, but if you spent 5.5 million, you could expect 3.22 per game. Not sure how useful that stat is just yet, but I’m trying to figure out ways to assess value for money. I don’t think the official site stats tell the full story, but i’m not sure how to unravel it properly…
How come no one has gone up yet today at all??
It’s now 7:55pm GMT!
Have they changed that this year too?
Extremely lucky I didn’t use my transfer wildcard….. Does there need to be atleast 2 gameweeks completed before players value begin to increase or decrease? I know with our AFL fantasy league a players value will only change after 3 weeks.
Saha was great for me this week as was ronaldo and should be certain of a few more in united’s very easy early run. Lampard looks to continue scraping goals together a and matt taylor is playing very forward with 4 shots on goal. Dissapointments for my team came in the form of Bellamy (liverpoool looked plain awefull), Berbatov not scoring despite looking dangerous, and Lucas Neil getting sent off (obviously still fuming over the Itallian oscar winning performances).
Can anyone tell why the values havn’t changed yet? I bought Zamora very early on, purely to make some cash and despite some 28,000 transfers in there is no change. Frustrating stuff.
So lads for week 2, who should I have as captain, as I see it the candidates on my team are as follows
Berbatov - vs sheffu
Lampard - vs boro
Saha - vs charlton
Ronaldo - vs charlton
Im sure you all know now that the players values have increased and decreased, however there are no real surprises with those players we predicted increasing in value, i.e. Terry, Mellberg, Campbell, Bowyer, Zamora, Saha etc, and others decreasing, i.e. Chimbonda, Neill, Bellamy etc.
It is worth noting that they did only increase or decrease 0.1 so unfortunately there wont be too much money made if you have used your transfer wildcard for this round. I will see how things pan out over the next few weeks as to when to use it. I still think it will be put to better use using the wildcard earlier on rather than later, however it could come in handy to make some big changes at the end of the season!
yeah, hardly what you could call a huge jump, oh well.
I agree with Nic - everything this year points towards finding the biggest value players and sticking with them for the season, and the first week told us a lot I reckon. Maybe best to wait a few weeks before taking the plunge, but my value’s up 0.7m already and there’s it’ll shift again tonight. The transfer tax is 50% so best to get the good value ahead of the pack and hold on.
For me, several guys look shoe-ins for the long-term - James, Primus, Stefanovic (until Lua Lua gets back - in fact, most of the Pompey side look good gambles), Bowyer, Arteta, and maybe Zamora until Ashton gets back. There’s also a rake of players who got a game at the lowest possible price, so now’s a good time to lock them in cheap if you think they’re decent prospects for the year.
oh, and do you guys reckon kanu will get game time all season by the way? i’m swithering about switching primus for kanu…
Roy, Yeah I reckon Kanu will play a good bit theis season.
Harry Redknapp said he was going to play him much more forward then West Brom did.
He will play until he hits a bad patch, I reckon.
If anyone can get the best out of a player it’s Harry “Houdini” Redknapp
[...] As Nic pointed out in the comments of the Quick Buy Alert post I said ‘However it may also be worth noting that the 12 day gameweek usually stops people buying for a few days. You don’t want to buy a player at the begining of an international break and they come back from international duty injured.’ [...]
guys, it’s time to buy rooney!
one of the reason i havent buy saha this season is that i’ve been waiting for this moment. rooney should be a better buy than saha. let time proves if i was right or wrong.
_________________________________________________________________
MY ANALYSIS:
the other reason i didnt buy saha is that i started the season with 3 MU players already: van der sar, ferdinand, and giggs.
van der sar is a safe bet, though costs a lot. freider, carson, james and kenny have get more points so far but on long terms van der sar will be better choice.
ferdinand scores some goals last season, prompting me to start with him. he’s scored a silly own goal in gameweek1, but the best is yet to come. i’ve sold him for Bridge at gameweek4 as i thought he will be injured for a long period. and now i am still regretting it!!
giggs is my secret weapon!! with rooney and scholes sidelined for first few gameweeks, giggs is going to supply most of MU’s attack. too bad i did’t make him my captain in gameweek3. else i will be in top 1000 now. but i finally make him my captain in gameweek4 and the bet works!! and until now he’s proved a better buy than ronaldo, as most of my friends chose.
in the season opener this biggest concern that will affects your team select will be — which top teams will be in form?? i have chosen MU and Tottenham, and tips Everton and West Ham to do well in the first few games. So i included 9 players(3 from MU, 2 each from others) from these teams in my select.
But I only get half correct!! MU and Everton did well but Tottenham and West Ham only did moderately. Meanwhile Chelsea and Portsmouth plays very well and whoever owns their players scores high. and Liverpool and Arsenal still in cooldown period!!—-the conclusion is you have to make the rightest prediction on the form team so that you can scores well in the season opener.
Why I chose a defender from each top teams in the starting? A friend teach me this tactic. Every gameweek one top team is sure to plays well and score a clean sheet. This settings will giv you at least a clean sheet bonus every gameweek, and maybe even more!! this tactic usually works better in midseason, when all top teams are in form.
As usual, I refused to buy the most expensive players in the league!!
last season i was without Henry, and i finished badly (82000 ranked)
This season I will even try it without Lampard and Terry!!(unless I have the money). From time to time you may regret it but if the cheap player also performs, you have nothing to worry about.
One of the worst decision I’ve made is to buy harewood(7.5) instead of Zamora(6.0)??? This is because I reckoned that Zamora is not the first choice player. the return of Ashton will get him to the bench again. Also now with Tevez here he has to keep on performing or find himself back on the bench. Anyone agrees with me?
Frustrating gameweek3!!!—having predicted MU to clean sheet against watford, i made ferdinand my captain. but it turns out watford score a goal! and arsenal beaten, and i put johnson in the bench for berbatov, having thought tottenham will beat everton. i even transferred benayoun for parker, who only score 1 point while benayoun get 6!! counting the loss, i could hav got myself some 59pts instead of pity 39.
Bad news! Ryan Giggs was injured in Champions League and could be out for 3 weeks.
