Transfers made on Wildcard August 31, 2006

Posted by Ed in : fantasy footy , trackback

Well here is my team and value as of this morning.

Look at the E (cost at last deadline) column and the C (cost now).

Wilcard team gains

As Nic pointed out in the comments of the Quick Buy Alert post I said

‘However it may also be worth noting that the 12 day gameweek usually stops people buying for a few days. You don’t want to buy a player at the begining of an international break and they come back from international duty injured.’

The main reason I have decided to backtrack on this is that I have had a poor start to the season and some of the teams I had bet on doing well have had a poor few games. So I decided that during the International break I would change my team to hopefully make some money and also if anyone got signed/injured I could buy/sell them. Lets face it people I have had an average start at best to the season and I’m willing to admit I was wrong.

What do you think?

1. Nic - August 31, 2006

Ed, what are you admiting you are wrong to?

I don’t think there is going to be any ‘right’ time to use your wildcard, this year will be more of a learning curve and im sure at the end of the season we will be saying ’should have used it earlier’ or ’should have used it later’ or ’should have used it during the international break’ etc etc. It does sound like a good idea using it when the transfer window deadline is about to firm up your squad.

I will be really interested to see how you go as I was going to use my wildcard now, but have changed my views and will be using it later on around gameweek 14. Although if my teams starts to struggle (they are not doing that well as it is…..) I may use it then or even around the next transfer period.

It just adds something else to this game to think about, however if people have already used it in your league it feels like you have an advantage over them, it is great!!

Let us know how you go with it, it will be interesting!!

2. Ed - September 1, 2006

Hey Nic, I was admiting that I made a poor team selection at the begining. Well actually I thought it was quite a good team, but some teams seem below par this year, Liverpool and Spurs in particular.

3. Neil - September 1, 2006

Hey Folks,
I’ve had a good start to the season so far, 164 points, but I fear that is all going to change soon. I’ve swapped Doyle in the front 3 for Kanu. It was an impulse after the 2 he scored in the last game !!
Fabregas , Reina and Gerrard are not performing, although I’m hanging onto Gerrard and Reina in goals for the 2 games they play in week5, about the only NU player I’d put on at the moment is Parker in midfield (NU playing twice in GW5 as well), or Duff the rest of them are muck, and with only one fit striker just signed I don’t think they’ll be doing a whole lot …..I know those words may come back to haunt me !!!
Giannakoupolos has slipped in value, but looked very good for the 70 mins he came on for in the last game, but maybe I’m being emotional after the saviour he was for the crappy FF season I had last year. No, he definitely looked good, as did that lad for AV, Abgonlahor – incredibly quick and having a go at goal as well – getting the full 90 each week – so far – , cheap at 6, and in what appears so far to be a reasonable side (I doubt this AV run will last past December though). Charlton keeper looked really good in their last game, and I’m not sure if Bent will start scoring now he’s got 2 in the net, penalty and a messy looking puck into the net !! although both him and Andy Johnson seem to be confidence players.
I’ll have to get Pompey’s mf Davis in at some stage – at 5.5 he’s worth a punt I reckon.

That being said with all the transfers that have gone through in the last 3 days it’s completely different terrain now to what it’s been for the last 3 weeks !! Should be interesting, and hopefully not to damaging for my team !!
Great to have a forum for FF !

4. Roy - September 1, 2006

i reckon nick’s right – there’s no right and wrong for when to use your wildcard – you should use it when you know you want a certain team, and you have some strong reason for taking the plunge. for me, i saw a lot of players with long-term value and i wanted to lock that value in at a low price, and it’s worked really well, because my team value’s now around 103m, and i don’t really want to sell the players i’ve made money on.

i was gutted to see ashley cole go to chelski as it snookers wayne bridge a little – it’s like Steven Warnock last year – he went up to over 5 million from 4.5, but he dropped like a stone the minute Traore and Riise started getting games. Bridge will probably see a sell-off now i reckon, cos Cole will start, despite Bridge playing three consecutive blinders. They’ve also kept Huth, but Mourinho seems to stick with a pretty settled back four doesn’t he? Would Boulharouz start do you think?

pompey’s gonna be interesting cos he’s signed two midfielders, a winger and an outright striker (although he sold Todorov). there are only 11 starting slots so hopefully Primus and Stefanovic will still start – i reckon three Pompey players is a good formula for the season.

zamora is also gonna have extra competition for a place in the starting line up, eh? amazing stuff – the transfer window run in was brilliant last night.

5. Roy - September 1, 2006

by the way – one transfer’s kind of gone under the radar i reckon – Baptista to Arsenal. Wenger will play him a lot differently to the way Real Madrid played him, and when he’s allowed to charge into the box, he scores a lot of goals. fingers crossed they tag him a midfielder, and that they undervalue him!

6. Gansta Guppy - September 2, 2006

I do think that all the last minute signings are making things interesting.

Who to sign and who to keep?….we’ll probobly see a few of last seasons star performers finally getting some games. Pascal Chimbonda , Steed Malbranqe, Ashley Cole might be worth a shot.

Also some other sigings Baptista, Huth, or Southgate, could be worth a cheap gamble…

Either way I wouldn’t expect them to play too soon as any sensible coach would take atleast a few weeks to get a player intigrated into the team.

7. Gansta Guppy - September 2, 2006

Just another thought on the wildcard…

if you have played your wildcard this week and all your players break their legs on international duty… you can still change them all without points being deducted as long as you make the changes that game week… I think you still get to keep whatever profit you made anyway.

Also Have a look at Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano when they move to West Ham… they are certainly world class….but will they fit in.

8. Ed - September 2, 2006

Hey Gansta Guppy, welcome to the FPL blog.

Yeah I think a few players were not being played for fear of them being injured and any potential transfer being scuppered.

Gallas and Cole will go straight into the starting line-ups I would imagine. Leaving Djorou and Bridge benched.

Maybe it’s a good time to sell bridge on?

No sign of a price for Tevez or Mascherano yet.

I have made a saleable profit on Bullard and Wayne Bridge this game week (0.2 million) and I hope prices continue to rise.

I think Rossi to Newcastle could be a good signing too.

Roy some stunning deals in the last 24 hours. It kept me interested all day!

9. Roy - September 2, 2006

it’s tempting to sell Bridge but i suppose Ashley Cole could do a metatarsal today or mid-week, so no sense in doing anything hasty eh? it’d mean losing half the profit anyway, and with a 0.5 rise it’s only going to net you 0.2 million, so no worries if that changes by 0.1 eh?

i’m wondering who to swap in if Bridge gets benched – will Boulharouz get a game? Liverpool have a double-header coming up, so it could be a good time to slot in a red (but they’re all pretty pricey).

10. Roy - September 3, 2006

by the way ed, great call on dunne – he was outstanding against germany last night, and i just had a sneaky peek at man citeh’s upcoming run of games – they’ll get a few clean sheets, surely!

jordan is nice and cheap but my fave of their back four is micah richards – i think he’s going to start threatening from set pieces and he’s as skillful as anyone in the league (scored on his debut for England schoolboys with an overhead kick, for example) – there’s more about him as a tenacious d-style wonderboy on http://www.icfds.com.

dunne was immense last night and if he keeps up that form he’ll get a lot of bonus points.

11. Aussiejezza- aka sheffield owls - September 4, 2006

Does anyone know what the word is on Henry? I have heard reports that he is not 100% fit, which may be the reason for his lack of any fantasy points. Despite not having him in my team , I still cannot help but feel vulnerable not having him, I have a bad feeling that he will demolish boro’s defence. I think his true value comes in the form of having him as a captain option, where his consistent point scoring makes him a relatively safe captain choice.

What are everyone’s thoughts? Is he still worth 14mil?

Also, with Rooney coming back, will Saha still play full minutes?

12. Neil - September 4, 2006

Unless there’s something we don’t know about, Ferguson would be mad to take Saha off with the way he’s playing. The 2 of them, Rooney/Saha, worked well together in the 1st match, so he may play them together for the next few weeks, until the Champions league, FA cup, league cup commitments start to get too heavy. I presume he’ll save Roon/Saha for the bigger matches, and use Solskjaer a fair bit against the minnows as a sub for one of these 2 who looks tired. Although that could all very easily be wrong !!!
Henry had more shots total, and more shots on target than any other Premiership player in the last gameweek, he’ll come good quite soon. I am waiting for Fabregas to do something/anything, he’s quite expensive, I think I may get rid of him for Cahill or someone who’s actually scoring a few points ? Any thoughts ?

13. gansta Guppy - September 4, 2006

Henry, usually starts the season quite slowly last season he was injured… and the season before that it took him a while to warm up as well…. the question always has been _when_ to buy him.

This season things are a bit more interesting , between Saha, Rooney, Sheva, Zamora, Bellamy, Teves, Kanu, Bent and some of the others all give you alternatives.

Money Better spent? What do you all think?

14. Ed - September 4, 2006

I would say that Saha and Rooney will be the first choice pairing. They will start all games together where they are fit.

Henry on the other hand is an interesting one, He costs 5 million more then the likes of Darren Bent.

Now if you think if it like this, you could have Henry and two other 6.5 million strikers for the same price as.
Saha, Bent and Yakubu/Johnson.

So you can have a striker who will score 20+ goals and get you 5-10 assists (Henry) and two other strikers who will get you maybe 10 goals each, but you could also go for three 8.5-9.0 million strikers that are proven in the premiership (Bent, Johnson, Saha, Yakubu, etc..) and they will all almost definately get you 18-20 goals and a few assists. Will that work out better points wise? probably.

Worth considering I guess.

15. Roy - September 4, 2006

henry is definitely worth the money as a lone captain, as he’s consistently delivered in the region of 7.5 points per game and been the top points scorer every season since the year dot.

i did some stats and figured out that on average, for every 1m spent beyond the cheapest player in each position, you can expect 1.6 points per game in return. so, for a 4.5 million goalie, a 4.4 million defender, a 5.3 million midfielder, or a 6.3 million striker, you should expect 1.6 points per game. if you’re getting more, you’ve got value for money (on average, based on last year’s stats).

if you played Henry as captain every week he was fit last year, you’d have netted 15 points per game. When you divide that by 1.61 you end up with a price of 8.6 million, and guess what – if you add to that to the cheapest cost of a striker right now (5.3 million) you end up with… wait for it… 13.9 million. the exact price he costs right now.

that means Henry is fair value for money based on last year’s stats (but only if he’s your sole captain). saying that, the average return per game is up on last year’s average so far this season, so it might change.

16. Mark Aegerter - September 5, 2006

Hey Roy, thanks for the invite. I joined the league you guys have set up. Great posts. I will jump in when I have the time.

If anyone is interested in Fantasy Champions League, I will leave the link to enter your team. This is a pay league, about $14 in US. Prizes and all. Not bad for 14 bucks. League is a little different that the one we are in so check out the rules and scoring so you understand. I did not make a league, but if enough interest I am sure Ed can do that if we want.

http://soccernetchampions.fantasyleague.com/

There should be another free one that is very similar to the EPL one we are in now. It just has not started yet, so when it does, I will make sure I let you all know. Free is better after all.

See you all around.

17. Ed - September 5, 2006

Hey Mark, Welcome to the blog.

I will probably do the UEFA fantasy football for the champions league
http://en.uclfantasy.uefa.com/M/home.mc

It’s very similar to the FPL and is made by the same company http://www.ismltd.com/.

Roy, I think that the only reason to pick Henry is that he is a safe consistent point scorer as captain, but in recent seasons other players have started to look attractive as captain, Frank Lampard for example and John Terry. Wayne Rooney or Louis Saha will make good captains too if they keep up there run of form. Of course there is always Shevchenko to consider too, who if he starts firing on all cylinders will be unstopable.

I don’t think they winner of FPL ever won by picking Henry as captain every week. You have to look at players that could make a big impact that week and take a small gamble every now and then.

18. Mark Aegerter - September 5, 2006

Ed, that is the second one I was talking about, the free one. What the heck is taking them so long to launch it? I like time to second guess all of my original picks so I can change the squad ten times over.

Mark

19. Ed - September 5, 2006

LOL, mark.

Yeah I know what you mean!
I do that all the time for the first few weeks of FPL.

Constantly build new teams :)

20. nigel - September 5, 2006

What are everyone’s thoughts on Kuyt? I know his work rate his high. Will it translate at Pool?

21. Mark Aegerter - September 5, 2006

I was impressed with his 30 minute run out last week. I also would not touch a Liverpool striker for my fantasy team. Rotation. Who is going to play? I would rather have a D Bent, who will never sit, than a great stiker on a team with four potential starters.

Moose

22. Ed - September 5, 2006

Hey nigel,

I think Kuyt will turn into a great asset for Liverpool, I seen him play at the Ireland vs Holland match a while back and he looks the real deal. He will probably set up more goals then he scores, but as Mark said, will he start every week? Doubtful knowing Benitez. He is the new Claudio “the tinker man” Ranieri!

I think there are only 4 liverpool players you can be guarenteed will start, Gerrard, Reina, Carragher and Hyppia. Everyone else is on rotation and even at that Gerrard has been rested on occasion the saturday before a champions league game.

23. Roy - September 6, 2006

hi Ed – do you reckon the winner of the overall league has left Henry out of the side when fit? he doesn’t play as many games as the likes of Lampard but when he is fit and on form, he’s a phenomenon.

are you going to leave him out of the side? i tried it for a while last year but lost out to folk who picked him as captain. one thing’s for sure – he’s only value for money if you’re planning to play him as your captain every week – if you don’t, he’s a luxury isn’t he?

chimbonda has fallen to 5.2 by the way – reckon he’ll start for Spurs guys?

24. Mark Aegerter - September 7, 2006

Ed, Champions League is up and ready. Are you going to put a league in for us?

Let the second guessing begin.

Mark

25. Aussiejezza- aka sheffield owls - September 7, 2006

Has anyone else noticed that gerrard hasn’t got a shot on goal in the EPL yet? (4 shots off target)

I had thought of changing ronaldo to gerrard although I am having serious second thoughts now as ronaldo has had 21 shots in 3 games with 6 of them on target and most of them just going over.

Is this the year to have ronaldo? I guess i will just keep him untill gerrard gets a goal or two.

26. Ed - September 7, 2006

Mark, League set-up and running. I can’t choose a team! too many options.

Aussiejezza, I know what you mean about Ronaldo, he looks like he is turning into a proper player this year and not just a showboater. I have Gerrard and will seriously thing of getting rid of him if he doesn’t start to perform soon.

27. loans021 - September 2, 2008

its very reasonable article.
